Job Title: Setup Machinist
Reporting To: Tyler LeBrun
Location: Luverne Manufacturing Facility
Hours of work: 7:30 - 16:30 (40 Hours – Full Time)
The Setup Machinist is responsible for complete machine setup, first article validation, and production readiness of CNC machining centers. This role requires advanced technical knowledge of CNC programming, tooling selection, fixture setup, work holding, and process optimization. The Setup Machinist ensures machines are properly configured to produce parts that meet blueprint specifications, quality standards, and production timelines.
This is a senior-level machining position requiring strong troubleshooting ability, blueprint interpretation, and independent decision-making.
Key Accountabilities
Machine Setup & Programming

Set up CNC machines for new and repeat jobs
-
Install and align fixtures, vises, chucks, and work-holding devices

Set machine origins and work offsets per setup documentation
-
Load, set, and qualify tooling
-
Adjust feeds, speeds, and offsets for optimal performance

Perform program edits and prove-out new or revised programs
-
Troubleshoot program or machine issues
Process Control & Quality

Perform and document first article inspections
-
Verify all dimensions meet blueprint tolerances

Maintain close tolerances with high demand for squareness, concentricity, finish, and parallelism

Identify and correct dimensional or process deviations

Reduce scrap and rework through process optimization
Production Support

Support CNC Machinists during production runs

Train operators on job-specific requirements

Monitor tool life and cutting performance

Recommend improvements to increase efficiency and profitability

Assist with continuous improvement initiatives
Safety & Compliance

Follow all safety procedures

Maintain clean and organized work areas

Ensure compliance with legal and security requirements

Lift materials up to approximately 40 pounds
Basic requirements
-
High School Diploma or equivalent
-
5+ years CNC machining experience
-
Advanced blueprint reading and GD&T understanding
-
Strong knowledge of tooling, work holding, and cutting strategies
-
Ability to edit CNC programs (G-code)
-
Experience setting up multi-axis CNC machines
-
Eligible to obtain and maintain required security clearance (USA Citizenship required)
Preferred requirements

Setup Machinist
Job Title: CNC/Machinist

As a CNC Machinist for Backdraft MFG, you will have the opportunity to use a variety of precision measuring instruments, inspect in process or finished parts and feature characteristics as well as manufacturing methods to blueprint specifications. This is a chance for you to develop a career within a growing business and to help us improve our processes.
Key accountabilities
Setting up fixture components for jobs that require CNC Machining
Understanding and have functional use of CNC code and CNC programming
Setting machine origins in accordance with the set-up instructions
Working to machine dimensions and maintain close tolerances and correlated dimensions with a high demand for squareness, concentricity, finish, and parallelism
Setting and loading all tools in conjunction with set-up instructions to complete assigned jobs
Ability to lift various items weighing up to approximately 40 pounds
Basic requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent with 2+ years experience in machining operations or a Precision Machining Certificate
Knowledge of machining methods, cutting qualities of metals and tools
Ability to read and understand blueprints
